COURSE MEMO

 

 

Welcome to TỮ 104. This course memo is prepared to inform and guide students about the course they will follow.

This course is aimed at students studying business administration in the Turkish language.

 

Aims: The general aim is to help students gain necessary English language skills in order to communicate at the pre-intermediate level as the continuation of 101-102 and 103.

It provides students with the general English language skills required to engage effectively in routine forms of social interaction and everyday activities.

It includes thorough and comprehensive study on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.

The TỮ 104 course also aims to motivate learners by basing the content around up to date topics of international interest.

 

 

Course Content

 

During the course, students are expected to develop vocabulary, structure and basic communicative skills in everyday situations like:

·                 Appearance and dress,

·                 Past experiences,

·                 Cities; hometowns; countries,

·                 Health problems; medication and remedies,

·                 Food and restaurants,

·                 World geography and facts,

·                 Invitations and excuses,

·                 Life changes; plans and hopes for the future.

 

Students are encouraged to learn more about the world and other cultures through the medium of English and personalization is emphasized.

 

Structure  Content

·               Questions for describing people,

·               Present perfect yes/ no and  Wh- questions, statements and short answers,

·               Adverbs before adjectives; conjunctions,

·               Infinitive complements; modal verb should for suggestions,

·               So, too, neither and either; modal verbs would and will for request,

·               Comparative and superlative forms of adjectives,

·               Future with present continuous and be going to

·               Describing changes with the present tense, the past tense, the present perfect tense and the comparative; verb + infinitive

         

 

                                 

Course Objectives

 

By the end of the course the students will be able to:

· Ask about and describe people’s appearance; identify people,

· Describe past experiences; exchange information about past experiences and events,

· Ask about and describe cities; ask for and give suggestions; talk about travel and tourism,

· Talk about health problems; ask for and give advice; make requests; ask for and give suggestions,

.  Express likes and dislikes; agree and disagree; order a meal,

·  Describe countries; make comparisons; express opinions; talk about distances and measurements,

·  Talk about plans; make invitations; accept and refuse invitations; give reasons; take and leave messages,

.  Exchanging personal information; describe changes; talk about plans for the future,

.   Read and follow instructions,

.   Complete dialogues,

.  Write letters, e-mails, articles, and proposals,

    .  Read and guess words in short texts, ask and answer questions, make   

       discussions,

 

    .  Listen and follow instructions, and do related activities such as answering the       

       given questions..

          (Jack C. Richards with Jonathan Hull and Susan Proctor)

All students are required to purchase the original of this material. Students with pirate copies will not be accepted in class.

 

*You will also be given extra worksheets if/when needed.

Grading Scale

The following letter grade system will be employed. The students should not expect a ‘Curve’ to be employed. DELSU reserves the right to announce a Catalog or Curve. 

AA       : 90 – 100

BA       : 85 - 89

BB      : 80 - 84

CB      : 75 - 79

CC      : 70 - 74

DC      : 65 - 69

DD      : 60 - 64

FD       : 50 - 59

Expectations from the Students

 

The following classroom behaviour is expected from all students for their own benefit.

1.      The absenteeism limit for this course is 12 hours. The students who exceed this limit will not be able to take the final exam.

2.     Attendance is taken at the end of each class hour. Students are required to keep track of their own attendance. The instructor is not responsible for supplying regular attendance figures to the students.

3.     In case of clashing hours, the administration in DELSU requires a letter issued by the head of the respective department to certify this matter. Also, the students with late registration in the courses must provide the unit with approval from the student’s affairs office.

4.     Medical reports are accepted only if they are submitted in due course and with proper attribution to the regulations of the university. 

5.     The students must attend and be prepared to become an active and successful participant of the course. To do this:

a.      Students have to come to class prepared with the relevant course material.

(Notebook, pen, course book, reading material, etc..) 

b.     Students should adhere to the deadlines of assignments and tasks.

c.     Students should participate in classroom discussions, and thus create a positive learning environment.

d.    Students are not allowed to activate mobile phones during class.

6.     Students have to be punctual to all lessons. (a 5 minute delay will be accepted for  9:30 courses only)

 7.    Academic honesty and professionalism is expected from all students. Plagiarism is using another person's ideas, words, and style without citing its source. This is stealing and will not be tolerated. Plagiarized work will receive a failing grade.

8. Cheating in any form is against the ethical and professional policies of DELSU and ATILIM University. In this respect any student found violating this policy will automatically receive a zero (0) and be referred to the related disciplinary senate.
